Binge Eating Disorder and Acceptance

Recently, by way of an interview, I participated in a news segment on Binge Eating Disorder for 100 Huntley Street, which is a popular Christian TV show here in Canada. The focus of the interview for me was on my personal struggle with BED rather than what I do as a Life Coach or even in my religious or spiritual beliefs. It was a challenge for me to speak of myself and my own struggles, to be vulnerable, rather than to show up as someone who has battled with BED and won on both a physical and emotional level. This brings me to the topic of acceptance, which is really the most powerful place that any of us can be in, and in fact is necessary before we can make significant changes in any area of our lives.

Acceptance of where we are today is the place that all of us need to come to first in order to find some kind of peace within ourselves. Learning to accept ourselves will allow each of us to take a "macro" look at our lives so that we can acknowledge our successes, along with challenges, and then focus on the areas we wish to make changes in. With BED, or weight struggles in general, we tend to only take a "micro" look at ourselves believing that if we didn't have this to contend with that our lives would be so much more successful and we would be much happier.

As a Life Coach, I truly believe that the most powerful place that anyone of us can be in is in a place of acceptance. Once we accept where we are at today, all we need is a little bit of willingness in order to make small shifts in our thoughts and actions in order to produce powerful changes in our lives. Willingness to stay focused on the task at hand, and letting go of the outcome trusting that it will take care of itself.

So by accepting ourselves we are simply acknowledging where we stand today, without judgement, which then leaves us a blank canvas to draw on in looking forward to our futures, and that is a very positive and powerful place to be.
