Cravings

"All cravings are the mind seeking salvation or fulfillment in external things and in the future as a substitute for the joy of Being" Eckhart Tolle

When I read this post from Exkart Tolle on Twitter this morning I knew immediately that I had to speak to it.

For people who suffer from Binge Eating Disorder, being overweight or obese would lend one to believe that being "over-stuffed", so to speak, is the problem when in fact it's the exact opposite. People who struggle with this issue are, truthfully, starving. Starving to have that void filled up and to feel at peace in the world.

As a Life Coach, not a therapist, I believe that for practical purposes that the "why" of it is not necessarily that helpful. To make changes in your life, regardless of what area you are focusing on, what is most supportive is to asses where you are today, with gentle appraisal, and define where you would like to be. All that is left is to step on the path, and to have someone cheer you on along the way, help you stay motivated and focused on your goals, and hold you accountable to the things that you say matter to you.

Someone wise once told me "A craving is not a command", ha! I know that for people with Binge Eating Disorder it feels like it's exactly that, a command. How we learn to tackle cravings is the same way that we tackle other challenges. We define the goal and then take small steps, focusing on staying in this day and this moment, and we celebrate our successes. This is what I call a "Reset", and we can push the reset button in our lives as many times as we need to. The only thing the past is useful for is to discern what was a wise decision or a valuable learning experience.
